What to see

  • The exterior: the current building keeps the tiled roof, curved gable and railings of the previous theatre.
  • Single-act seats: seats on the 4th floor let you watch a single act of a play.
  • Kabukiza Gallery: on the 5th floor of the Kabukiza Tower, with exhibits on kabuki history and art including woodblock prints.
  • Rooftop garden: a garden on top of the theatre, with a weeping cherry as its signature tree.
  • The reversed phoenix: among the phoenix-crest roof tiles, one faces the opposite way.

History

It opened in 1889 in Kobikicho, now part of Ginza. After fires and wartime damage, the fifth building opened in April 2013.
