What to see

  • The eight ponds: Deguchi, Okama, Sokonuke, Choshi, Waku, Nigori, Kagami and Shobu.
  • Snowmelt: water from Mt. Fuji's snow takes about 24 years to filter through lava before it wells up.
  • Local guides: a paid guide service. The basic course takes about two hours, and a Japanese-language guide costs 3,000 yen for up to two hours.

History

The ponds were long a holy place of Fuji worship, where pilgrims purified themselves before the climb. They became part of the Mt. Fuji World Heritage site in 2013.

Getting there

From Fujisan Station take the local bus (bound for Uchino) or the Fujikko sightseeing bus for about 25 minutes to the "Oshino Hakkai" stop, then walk about three minutes.
